Parts of May and June of this year I spent at Arcosanti.
Located in the high desert of central Arizona, Arcosanti is an urban laboratory under construction that seeks to reduce humankind's impact on the earth while improving quality of life.
Based on Italian architect Paolo Soleri's concept of arcology, the fusion of architecture + ecology, Arcosanti uses architectural design to reduce the need to use energy (especially for transportation and heating/cooling). Arcosanti is a place where people both live and work as they participate in this "urban laboratory" and is open to visitors daily.
In its current phase of construction, Arcosanti is home to about 200 people. Students and volunteers come for 5 week “workshops” where they learn about Archology using the hands-on method. They work at activities that range from construction and concrete form, to architectural design and drawing, to ceramics and brass foundry to build the Soleri Bells and sculpture that are sold to finance the project.
Graduation Day!
